How to choose a cat shelter design

  • Winter cold: an insulated shelter (foam board in the floor, walls and lid, covered by an inner liner) holds a cat’s body heat; the Insulated Outdoor Cat Shelter and the Cat Shelter Bench are built that way.
  • More than one cat: the Duplex gives two cats separate rooms; the Two-Story stacks two rooms with a ramp.
  • Rain and a feeding spot: the Covered Porch design keeps the doorway and the food bowls under a roof, raised on legs.
  • A first build: the Simple Outdoor Cat Shelter and the A-Frame use the fewest parts and straight cuts.
  • A porch or patio where a cat house would not be welcome: the Cat Shelter Bench hides the shelter under a bench seat.

What every design shares

A raised floor off the wet ground, a doorway sized for a cat (about 6 × 6 in) over a low sill, a second escape opening, a lid or panel that comes off for cleaning, and loose straw for bedding. Before you cut, read the insulated shelter’s before-you-build notes and the simple shelter’s before-you-build notes in the journal.

Questions about outdoor cat shelters

Which outdoor cat shelter plan should I build?
For winter, start with the insulated designs: foam board in the floor, walls and lid, a raised floor and a small doorway keep the warmth in. For a milder climate or a first build, the simpler single-wall shelters take fewer steps. Every plan on this page lists its finished size and step count so you can compare them.
Are these plans or finished cat houses?
They are digital build plans (PDF downloads with an animated 3D build guide). You buy the lumber, foam and hardware from the plan’s shopping list and build the shelter yourself. No physical item ships.
What goes inside an outdoor cat shelter?
Loose straw, not blankets or hay: straw stays dry and lets a cat burrow, while fabric holds moisture and freezes. Our build journal covers insulation and door placement in detail.
